A Chill Guide to Being More Sustainable

Here at Elims, we’re obsessed with sustainability and natural products.

But we’re also realists. We know that transitioning to a more sustainable way of living can be overwhelming. And so, we’re all about baby steps -- finding small ways to gently introduce more better-for-the-planet alternatives into your life. Obviously, our oral care products are a great step in the right direction. And, here are some other easy ways to move towards the north star of total eco-friendly living (#goals).

BYO (Bring Your Own): Most single use plastics have sustainable alternatives (reusable straws, canvas bags, travel mugs). We find the key here is to have the item with you when you need it (we’ve all realized our travel mug is on the kitchen counter right as the barista takes your order). What’s worked for us is to keep a stash of the reusable items in your car or purse. You’ll feel like a total badass when you pull up to the market and remember the box of goodies in the trunk of your car.

Out with the Old: Over lockdown, many of us did a Marie Kondo-inspired closet cleanout and were left with a pile of clothes that no longer bring us joy. Donating to a local charity is great. Also, we love selling clothes via ThredUp or Poshmark -- it’s super easy and they responsibly recycle what they can’t sell.

Buy Vintage: One (fun) way to be more sustainable is to buy second hand clothes, furniture and housewares. Make a day of it, and head with your friends to a thrift shop or a flea market. Plus, you (and your place) will be looking great in your one-of-a-kind finds.

Mindful Groceries: When shopping at the market, it’s easy to get carried away and fill your cart with lots of yummy treats. But, when you buy too much, or don’t plan ahead, good food can go bad in your fridge. Pay a bit more attention, plan your meals and buy less than you think you need. And, don’t forget your reusable tote!

What simple swaps have you made on your path to more sustainable living? We’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments below.

      • Join your local Facebook Buy Nothing Group. Not only do you get to know some of your neighbors but you also get to share, gift and ask for items and services. Instead of hoarding, your unused items can be treasured by another. Love your motto!
